Driving to ANU
University students, staff and visitors usually elect to drive to ANU because they believe this is their quickest and most flexible form of travel. However, in most cases alternate transport choices provide an easier, cheaper, faster journey.
On days where you have to travel by car, try to combine other activities to save on the number of car trips — e.g. pick up the dry cleaning, visit friends etc. Remember you can reduce pollution levels by ensuring the car is serviced regularly and avoid braking or accelerating hard during the trip.
Did you know...
32 tonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted for each Australian annually — this is one of the highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions in the world.
The average Australian car emits 4.5 tonnes of C02 per year!
There are currently 11 million cars and trucks in Australia consuming about 26 billion litres of fuel a year and emitting approximately 71 million tonnes of C02 into the atmosphere.
Why you should leave the car at home when possible
Parking at ANU can be difficult during the teaching period and, with the addition of new buildings, will become even more so in future. The alternatives to driving are cheaper and healthier (and in many cases faster) while simultaneously reducing greenhouse emissions, air pollution, road deaths, lung disease and the need for extensive car parks and roads. Reducing your car use by even one day a week makes an important difference.
The average medium sized car uses approximately 10.4 litres per 100km. If you live 15km from the ANU (e.g. Weston Creek) you could be paying up to $500 per year traveling to and from the university and a minimum $121 on car parking. In running costs alone, you can save $3.57 ($2.07 if catching the bus using a school-term Faresaver 10 bus ticket), based on insurers' estimates of the cost per kilometre of petrol and maintenance for a modern, efficient, well-maintained car, for 30km a day of commuting. If you never buy a car you could additionally save around $6.58 a day in ownership costs, and avoid the cost of parking altogether!
This all adds up to over $2000 a year! Parking can add a further cost of over $300 a year.
Carpooling
Carpooling allows car drivers to share travel costs. Use the ANU carpooling database to find others in your area to share the driving with.
Parking
Your parking options include:
- The Flexible Transport Package for combining permit parking and bus travel (students only).
- Pay-and-display (voucher) parking areas for occasional drivers.
- Short-term free parking (30 minutes–2 hours).
- Flexible one-day parking permits (scratchies). These are available in books of 10 for the occasional driver.
- Parking permit (and for added cost a reserved spot in multi-storey car parks) for frequent drivers.
Traffic Regulations
ANU parking regulations are essentially the same as those within the ACT or any other capital city. It is important you read signs to ensure you are complying with the prevailing parking regulations and speed limits, as failure to do so may result in a parking fine. For those unfamiliar with ACT regulations, please note that red or yellow kerbs indicate No Parking. Additionally, the speed limit on campus is 40kph and in shared zones 10kph and speed humps have been positioned on several roads to act as traffic-calming devices. Be careful when driving at night, as the University is home to a number of students who live in residences located on Daley Road, Garran Road, Mills Road and Childers Street.
If you have any questions about the parking or driving regulations please contact the Parking Administration Office on T: (02) 6125 3999.
