Visitor Parking

In this page go to:

On any given work day, the University will accommodate up to 12,000 people. This means that parking on campus is sometimes very limited. For visitors a variety of options are available, including pay and display (voucher) parking areas and short-term parking (30 minutes–2 hours). In some cases visitors will also have been given a day parking permit which allows them to park in the general permit parking carparks.

Pay and Display Areas

Pay and Display ticket parking sign‘Pay and Display’ voucher carparks are located on the campus for visitor use. Drivers parking in these areas should purchase a voucher from the vending machines located within the carpark and then display it on the dashboard of their motor vehicle.

The cost of vouchers is detailed on the vending machine..

Time Limit Parking

Short-term time-limited parking signShort-term parking is available throughout the campus in time-limited areas. These areas are clearly marked with signs indicating the time limit. The zones are regularly patrolled by University parking officers to ensure visitor parking is available at all times.

Temporary Permit Parking

In some circumstances official visitors to the University may be entitled to park in permit carparks. To be eligible, the visitor must display a 'One Day Parking Permit' on their motor vehicle. These permits are available through the administration area of the department you are visiting. The permits will allow you to park in areas marked:

  • General Permit parking;
  • Staff Only Permit parking.

Please note that the 'One Day' permit does not allow parking in the following areas:

  • Authorised or Reserved Parking, which is open only to holders of an authorised permit.
  • ‘Pay and Display’ parking.
  • Time-limited zones.

If in any doubt, you should check the ‘Conditions of Use’ printed on the reverse side of the ‘One Day’ permit.

Where possible, to avoid inconvenience, you should ask the department to send you a permit before you visit the University.

Official Parking Spaces

Official Visitors parking signA limited number of official visitor spaces have been made available in certain areas of the campus for short term parking.

These parking spaces are managed by the individual building's manager or receptionists. If you are visiting an area of the ANU on official business please contact the department concerned to identify if they can assist with a short term ‘Official visitor' permit or a ‘One Day’ permit for your business visit.

Parking in Union Court

Parking in the Union Court area is limited to Disabled drivers and authorised service vehicles in loading zones. Visitors to this area of campus can find parking in the Pay and Display carpark on Sullivans Creek Road.

Drivers should note that this is a shared zone with a 10kph speed limit.

Conference Parking

If you are attending a conference on the campus, please ensure that the conference organiser provides advice on where you can park. The organiser may also provide a permit for you to display on your motor vehicle. It is not always possible to provide conference attendees with parking on campus, particularly during busy periods of the year (e.g. Student Examination Periods, Conferring of Degrees etc). In this situation you may be asked to park in the ACT Government Pay and Display carparks located on the University’s eastern boundary between the ANU and Canberra City. If you do park in this area, please ensure that you purchase a parking voucher from the vending machine and display it clearly in your motor vehicle.

North Oval Car Parking Arrangements To Change

ANU Students and staff members would be aware in recent years of the significant increase in numbers of students enrolling in part time studies at the ANU.

An important issue for part-time students is they do not qualify for parking permits and therefore improving vehicle parking access on campus for this category of student has been raised at Transport Reference Group meetings.
The University has agreed to providing additional pay & display parking by reviewing and redesignating time limited parking arrangements on campus as appropriate. Other options will also be considered over time as demand profiles are identified.

The first location to be implemented will be the North Oval car park off McCaughey Street.
During the month of July the North Oval car park will be converted to 3 hour pay & display parking.
The voucher fees for parking in this car park will be the same as for surrounding ACT pay & display parking areas i.e.

  • $1.20 1 hour
  • $2.40 2 hours
  • $4.20 3 hours

The three hour limit is being instituted to address access issues for students needing to attend campus during the middle of the day and will improve turnover of the vehicles in the spaces. The change will be monitored by the Transport Office.
If you have any questions or comments regarding this change please contact the Transport Office at Parking@anu.edu.au

Some tips for driving

During the day there is significant pedestrian traffic across the campus. So when driving on campus you should always observe the speed limit (40Kph unless otherwise sign-posted) and take care at intersections and pedestrian crossings. You should also take care when driving at night as the University is home to a number of students, who live in residences located on Daley Road, Mills Road and Childers Street.

Parking and driving on campus is managed under the ANU Parking and Traffic Statute, the ACT Road Transport (Safety and Traffic Management) Regulations 2000, and the Australian National Road Rules. The provisions of the ANU Parking and Traffic Statute, number 169, are essentially the same as those applied within the ACT or any other capital city. It is important that you read signs to ensure you are complying with the prevailing parking regulations and speed limits, as failure to do so may result in a parking infringement notice being issued. For those unfamiliar with the ACT regulations, please note that red or yellow kerbs or edge lines indicate No Parking. Additionally the speed limit on campus is 40kph, and traffic calming devices have been positioned on several roads. If you have any questions about parking or driving regulations please do not hesitate to contact the Parking Administration Office on Ph (02) 6125 3999.

Some tips for parking

Parking on campus is at a premium during the day, so when you come to campus you should:

  • Always read the parking signs and instructions carefully.
  • Look for the signs on upright poles, on walls adjacent to the parking surface, or on the road surface.
  • Before visiting campus, check with the area you are visiting to confirm if any special parking arrangements have been made for your visit.
  • Parking is normally available in permit areas up to 9am. So if you are visiting arrive early.
  • Remember parking signs apply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless hours of restriction are stated on the sign.
  • To avoid parking infringement notices, do not park on the landscape, alongside any kerb coloured red or yellow, ‘Reserved or Authorised parking spaces’, in a designated parking area (e.g., Residents carparks and Permit areas) without clearly displaying a valid Parking Permit or in a loading zone unless you are actually loading or unloading.
  • Do not leave any valuables in plain view inside your motor vehicle and always ensure that it is locked and the windows are up.
  • Do not park in a disabled person bay unless authorised to do so by displaying a recognised disabled driver permit.
